Hi.

Welcome to my blog. These are the thoughts that I’ve managed to corral into paragraphs on the interwebs. Hope you have a nice stay!

Unexpected Ideals and Other News

Unexpected Ideals and Other News

I've been brainstorming ways to lower my cost of living here, giving up my apartment and renting a Craigslist room is a good solution. I've done this before and it worked out well. Several prospective new tenants for my own apartment later, I decided to contact a post myself. It was a 4 bedroom in a neighborhood close by. It looked cute, clean, safe. The ad mentioned that they only wanted a roommate of alternative sexual orientation, but they couldn't be serious, so I sent an email. They responded immediately with one question, was I queer. Neat.

Today, I contacted a local volunteer medic group that holds classes in Chicago on how to deal with gunshot wounds before EMS arrived. That sounded perfect, I love teaching. After sending the email requesting information on how to become involved, I noticed a paragraph on the website that read "this group is only open to people of African Descent". They never got back to me.

Briefly, I considered pleading my case in both instances. I'm stubborn. But I don't want to intentionally choose to live, or work with, a group of people who collectively agree that discrimination based on sexual orientation or race is how they prefer to do business. That mindset is hard for me to wrap my head around, but if I had to choose, I would still prefer this situation to one where neither side had the civil liberty to exercise an opinion. They can be that way, and I will ignore them.

On a brighter note, our credentialing process creeps ever forward. I begin my first training shift tomorrow!! Instead of only shadowing, I get to see patients!!! Even though it has been a slow start, there is a lot of thought and effort has gone into this program. The PA and MD heading the program are very involved at this point, as well as the EM group director, and the CEO's of all three hospitals we are slated to work at. I am grateful for this opportunity. There are many situations where new PA grads start in the ED with only a few days or a couple weeks of training, and even then they live in the fast track for ages so, whatever happens here it can only be beneficial.
